Dr. Maxim V. Nikolaev studies the basics of synaptic transmission and plasticity. Of particular interest are ion channels that provide synaptic communication between neurons. Dr. Nikolaev uses modern electrophysiological, molecular, optical and pharmacological approaches to study the structures, functions and regulation of ion channels. A new area of research is the development of photosensitive modulators of glutamate ionotropic receptors. These compounds quickly and reversibly control the activity of ion channels, which is necessary for a detailed study of the central nervous system in normal and pathological conditions.
