Dr Nalivaeva’s research is devoted to the study of the molecular mechanisms of regulation of brain activity and the development of neurodegenerative diseases, in particular, Alzheimer’s disease and the development of methods for epigenetic regulation of the neprilysin gene (NEP) – the main enzyme of catabolism of the amyloid peptide Aβ. A decrease in the content and activity of NEP in brain tissue during aging, under the effect of hypoxia in the pre- and postnatal periods, as well as in cerebral ischemia, contributes to the accumulation of Aβ and the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Studies conducted by N.N. Nalivaeva and colleagues using cellular and zootropic models have shown the effectiveness of pharmacological approaches (inhibitors of histone deacetylases, caspases, as well as green tea catechin EGCG) to increase the expression of NEP and prevent cognitive deficits caused by prenatal hypoxia in animals.
